Jake went along with the others, shot down packs of walkers to clear the way for the others, secured an entire knapsack full of supplies with the others, followed the exit strategy with the others and then when they got back to camp Jake was no longer there. his supplies, his guns, himself, gone without a trace. there was a search, of course, but nothing turned up. no signs of a struggle. no blood, no dead body, walking or otherwise. just nothing. after a couple days they had no choice but to assume him dead and move on. what else could they do?
and then the threats started arriving. bold and brazen ones, splashed bright red paint on the sides of buildings like bloody neon signs in this post-apocalyptic world. "WE HAVE JAKE ENGLISH. DELIVER YOUR SUPPLIES TO THE BARN AT THE EDGE OF TOWN OR WE KILL HIM." the same message, scrawled over buildings down a full city block. just so there would be no doubt, they leave scraps of Jake's belongings for them to find. a busted gun with no ammo left, his emptied and ripped-up knapsack. further down, a bloodied green overshirt hanging from a light pole and a note scratched into the sidewalk.
