[ dave ran like hell when it was all happening. there was too much confusion and chaos, he heard the shrieks of the undead and everyone was screaming, guns were going off and then someone grabbed him by the back of the shirt and pulled him around and before he knew what was going on he was just running. he'd slowed as they reached the back of the facility and looked around, trying to account for everyone, but then someone was picking him up and pretty much throwing him out the window.
they wouldn't let him go back when he realized dirk was missing. others searched, but not for long. too dangerous, they said. he's probably gone, we can't do anything about it.
so when dirk turns up one day dave is pretty much stricken with relief—and then fear, because he looks like a wreck, and everyone is treating him like he's one of the infected, except they won't shoot him, they won't even go near him to see if he's alright. they all just crowd to the back, the more defenseless hidden behind the better-armed people. god damn he hates being protected.
before long everyone goes to bed except the night watch and dave takes the opportunity to break rank and file, milling around the perimeter and watching dirk from a short distance. ]
