[ at least an hour goes by and it doesn't happen. if his eyes close it's to clench tight shut from the pain and his breathing gets heavier and more rattly as the infection sets in. soon it's everything that hurts, not just his arm and his shoulder. it radiates all the way down his side and he does more than his share of grimacing and writhing just to hold in any cries of pain. tears spill but he won't call out, he won't suffer out loud. the fever gets overwhelmingly high, breathing gets hard, he feels like his brain is literally frying.
another hour and he's still holding on, but absolutely delirious. his arm already looks foul and dead and there's a puddle forming underneath him because it just won't stop bleeding. he's too hot to feel the chill of blood loss and his head lolls to the side, staining blond hair red. ]
